Hydropower still king among renewables in United States

Hydropower, renewable energy source with a very long history of use, is still the most important source of renewable energy in United States, even despite the rapid growth of solar and wind capacity throughout the entire nation.

The latest data by Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that hydropower still leads the way as the most important source of renewable energy in United States, even despite the fact that hydro consumption has been on decline since higher levels in the mid-to-late 1990s.

EIA further reports how renewable energy accounted for 9.8% of total domestic energy consumption in 2014. Renewable energy use grew an average of 5% per year over 2001-2014, mostly because of rapid increase in solar and wind power capacity.

Around half of all renewable energy was used to generate electricity. However, within the electric power sector, renewable energy still accounted for only 13% of total energy consumed as fossil fuels still heavily dominate the electric power generation.

Transportation sector is constantly growing in renewable energy use, mostly because of the growing demand for liquid biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel.

Renewable energy use is steadily growing in all sectors, and for even better info check the official EIA page at http://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.cfm?id=21412
